"Another Housing Option" It's no surprise that recent housing prices in California have made it extremely challenging to provide affordable rental and homeownership housing to individuals and families. However, the Community Land Trust ("CLT"), is another proven option, created to offset this dilemma and to offer realistic home ownership and rental housing opportunities to disabled low and moderate income persons. Although the CLT movement can be dated back to the early and mid 50's, the concept is still fairly new and unfamiliar to many housing professionals and individuals. However, several states on the east coast and even places like Berkeley and Sonoma in Northern California, have adopted this alternative way of providing affordability to its residents, with great success. The City of Irvine, California, (adaptive re-use of the El Toro Marine Air Base), will be utilizing the CLT model to develop 9,000 new affordable homes. Clearly, the CLT movement is gaining momentum and becoming increasingly active in various parts of the nation. It is being recognized as an extremely desirable and workable option to create affordable housing for low and moderate-income persons. |
